AI will show up in lots of unexpected places. (Like a tartan necktie.)
To be read whilst listening to “Caledonia” by Dougie MacLean
I learned a while ago that there is an official register of tartans in Scotland. I then learned that in 2023, the wonderful Steven Patrick Sim, AKA The Tartan Artisan, created and registered the first ever AI-developed tartan last year. (Steve’s website in the links below.)
Steve was kind enough to share with me his journey in creating it, and let me be the first customer to buy a tie using that design from him. Steve owns the only other one currently. I just received it in the post, and am wearing it in the photo. I will wear it at Gartner's CIO Forums in Phoenix, London and Sydney shortly. Please say hi if you are there, and take a look!
The registration (link in comments) explains that there are a few significant numbers in the threadcount of the design. 42 represents the ‘answer’ in Douglas Adams’ “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”. 256 represents the number of values one byte can hold. And 56 represents a seminal Dartmouth workshop on AI in 1956. Awesome creativity.
I also created and printed my Valentine’s Day card this morning using AI for the first time ever. (I bought a traditional one last week, but seem to have lost it - waiting for my neuralink memory upgrade!)
I just thought I would share this because it is emblematic of the fact that AI will show up in lots of unexpected places in the next few years. It’s not only about the usual places we find tech. It is not only about modern/ cutting edge/ high-tech industries. AI will affect everything we do. Let’s hope we can shape it all to be positive, in the way that Steve has.
