Will the most powerful gift AI gives to humanity be humility?

A while ago, I was re-reading Nietzsche’s famous statement “god is dead”, lamenting the fact that the modern world found it harder to believe in god, leaving a gaping hole in our sense of meaning. I am not as smart as him and I haven’t got a funny moustache (at the moment), but it occurred to me that a similar dynamic was AI making humans suddenly feel that they aren’t the most intelligent creatures on earth/ in the universe. (I have since learned that the right term for this is human exceptionalism.) Along with the more pragmatic concerns that society is having about AI (taking our jobs, a tool for weaponized information/ disinformation, intellectual property theft/ leakage etc.), maybe we have to acknowledge this deep fear of not being the ‘special ones’ anymore too. I have always been a bit obsessed with humility. Arrogance really turns me off. Not only is it rude and dumb, I think it precludes true listening, learning and attempts the ‘triumph of the past over the future’ rather than the other way round. Maybe we could flip our perspective and look forward to AI imbuing us humans with a greater sense of humility. The kicker to this idea is the fact that, unlike many other technology disruptions, AI proves as much if not more of a threat to management and white collar workers, as to front line and blue collar workers.  I have been travelling a lot a lot recently, and I am always struck by the ‘get out of my way’ self-importance of the people I see in airline business class lounges, vs the opposite issue (lack of self-worth) with many in more traditionally lowly-viewed jobs. I wonder if we could add to the AI debate this idea of humility being one of the biggest gifts/ sources of value to come from AI. And maybe humility is the quality that can continue to make humans truly exceptional. #unthink #unask #unlearn #AI #AGI #ASI
